9 Digital Marketing Tips All Beginners Should Know

Digital marketing can be a really great way to earn an extra income through selling digital products and courses.
Whilst I always say that the main thing when it comes to digital marketing is being consistent, there are a few digital marketing tips that are essential for all beginners.
In this blog post, I share the must know digital marketing tips to ensure that you set off on your digital marketing journey, putting your best foot forward. Keep scrolling to find out more!
Research Your Competition
There are multiple reasons why you should research your competition when going into digital marketing.
Number one, when creating a digital marketing account and picking a niche, you need to know whether this is a niche that is already popular.
If you see other accounts creating similar content, it's actually a good thing. This shows that people are searching (and engaging) with that type of content online.
But (and this is a big but), you should only seek to take inspiration from these accounts, not copy them.
People are pretty quick to spot a copycat online and you seriously decrease your chances of building an engaged community if you’re just copying somebody else.
When researching your competition, you should look into the type of content that they’re posting and ask yourself questions such as:
- What are their best performing posts?
- How do they create their videos?
- How do they format their captions?
Taking inspiration from other accounts is a great way to build your own account, however, to really stand out, you should focus on your own niche, branding and message.
Prioritise Engagement
For lack of a better term, ‘posting and ghosting’ is arguably, the quickest way for your digital marketing business to fail.
Engaging with other accounts in your community, as well as your target audience, is how you’re going to let people know that your account exists.
Don’t expect your target audience to come to you - go to them instead!
A good rule of thumb is to spend 15 minutes every time that you post, engaging with your target audience and community.
By doing so, people will feel far more inclined to comment on your posts which will increase your engagement. They may even follow you too!
Provide Valuable Content
Valuable content can look different for every person that enters the digital marketing industry.
Some people enter the digital marketing industry purely to teach others about digital marketing and sell their digital products whereas others create theme pages that add value.
Digital marketing is all about thinking about the customer, not yourself.
Whatever you are choosing to post, think about your target audience and what they would like to see.
Learn SEO
Whether you’re choosing to stick to posting purely on social media or you're gravitating towards building a website, understanding the basics of SEO can skyrocket your growth.
And I get it. The term ‘SEO’ can be a little bit daunting.
But, you don’t have to be an SEO expert to learn how keywords work.
The easiest way to put this is, when you’re typing something into a search bar, the words that you type in are keywords.
When you type these keywords into that search bar, different results come up with those keywords in mind.
So, you should ask yourself, “what type of keywords would my target audience be typing in.”
You should then incorporate these words into your captions and your content.
Build a Newsletter
Email marketing is going to be your best friend when undertaking digital marketing.
It’s becoming increasingly harder to grow on social media platforms, so you should start building a newsletter list as soon as you can.
By building a newsletter, you have a direct link to your target audience's inbox.
Your email newsletter is a place for you to nurture your audience to eventually start selling your products or courses to them.
BUT, you shouldn't just sell. Use this newsletter to provide additional value to your audience too - this will make people want to stick around and position you as more of an expert in the industry.
But you may be left wondering 'how do I get people to sign up to my newsletter?’
The best way to do that is to create a lead magnet also known as a ‘freebie.’
This is a free product that when people buy, they have the option to sign up to your newsletter.
You can also regularly promote your newsletter sign up link on your social media platforms or have a pop up option on your website.
Promote Your Products Regularly
When selling digital products, you can’t just post about your products once and expect people to buy. It’s going to take a little more work than that.
Posting about your products regularly, whether that is within feed posts or on your stories, is a great way to keep your existing and new followers up-to-date with the types of products you sell.
When promoting your products, make sure that you’re talking about how this will be valuable for the person that buys it.
Collect Customer Testimonials
Once you start selling your digital products, you need to start collecting testimonials straight away. Testimonials are reviews from the customers that brought your products!!
Think of it like this, when you go onto Amazon to buy a product, you always check out the reviews first, right? This is the exact same for your own products.
People are much more inclined to buy once they see that other people had a good experience.
So show off those testimonials!! You can showcase your testimonials in multiple ways including in your videos, in your captions, in your stories and if you have a website, on there too.
Consider Using a Variety of Platforms
When people think of digital marketing, most people think of Instagram.
And don’t get me wrong, digital marketing on Instagram is such a great way to kick off your journey.
However, if you want to capitalise on a different audience, you should consider diversifying the platforms that you post content on.
TikTok, Pinterest and even building your own website can help to put your content in front of a new audience.
Build a Recognisable Brand
Having a recognisable brand is a great way to build a community.
Keeping a cohesive design within your brand colours, fonts and content allows your target audience to easily pick your content out from a sea of other accounts.
Stay consistent with this and you’ll build an audience that resonates with your style of content.
